| "WITH A SONG IN MY HEART" My name is Mia Knerly-Hess and I've been a professional singer for over 20 years. I've sung in a wide variety of venues and in many stylles. But my speciality is the music of World War Two This ties in with my interst in this historical era. I also share my love of music through a strong emphasis on Classic Jazz Standards and Musical Theater. I have worked with many area and nationally reknown big Bands; the shining star (so far) being Guest Vocalist with the Artie Shaw Orchestra. Over the years, I have amassed a large repetorie of music and even have a list (since other singers will ask me): 50 SONGS EVERY FEMALE JAZZ SINGER SHOULD KNOW. (Yes, I know...only FIFTY? Well, it's a start...) My musical career has taken me to many places and I've performed in an unusual variety (there's that word again!) of venues. I've performed at over 500 wedding receptions! And, boy, have I got stories! I've MC'd, led my own combos and done every kind of party, group or organization you can think of. It's not all glmaoruous or even fun some of the time. I think one of the highlights (or would you say, "lowlights?") was discovering my changing room was a horse stall, complete wtih the horse! I do an excellent portrayal of Carmen Miranda, a performer I greatly admire. (Did you know she was the highest paid female entertainer during WW2?) I truly enjoy singing for veterans, hearing their stories and evoking memories for them. I love it when someone say "You brought tears to my eyes" or "you made me laugh." It makes it all worth while. That, and it's really lovely to get paid for what you enjoy doing! It's been said that if you put a quarter in my ear, I'll keep on singing. I've been offered a lot of quarters and I'm still singing. Gratefully and joyously! I owe much to many people. My mother who taught me so much music --- and how to sing it. My father, who just loved music and shared that love with me. The band leaders I have worked with, espeically Harry Hershey, who I was associated with for over 20 years. My friends and family, of course! Especially all of them who have taken me to gigs and supported me in my endeavors. Thank you most of all to Thunder! And mostly, to Randy Wines who got me started singing profesionally. Without his help, I seriously would not be her now and my life never would have taken on this pattern and patina. I owe him what words can never convey. Thank you, Ace!. Save the firstt dance in heaven for me, honey! |
